BC municipalities back move to land-based fish farms

The Union of British Columbia Municipalities has added its voice to those favoring land-based salmon farms instead of open net pens in the Canadian province.

The 113-year-old organization, which represents all levels of local governments in BC, issued a resolution on Sept. 12 that urges the province to start working with their members, First Nation governments, conservation groups and the industry to make the conversion, the Star Vancouver reports.

“[T]he proliferation of open-net fish farms with non-native fish species threatens local waterways and wild fish species, undermining the economic, social and ecological well-being of local communities,” says......................................................
