Sea farming project releases first algae-based products

Together with the National University of Colombia and National Parks, the Mariculture project led by the Corporation for Sustainable Development on the Island of Providencia settled the Inter-administrative Agreement 010 of 2017, which among its activities meets the development of farming products such as whelk, algae and its sub products.

In this project phase, thanks to the support and advice from specialized personnel, two by-products were introduced: moisturizing cream and after sunbathing gel, made with carrageenan, a substance that makes up the cellular structure of a certain type of algae, in this case, Hypnea musciformis.

This phycocoloid, with thickening and gelling properties, is being extracted from some of the red algae farmed and harvested in..............................................................
