Shellfish safety pioneers adapt self-driving car technology

The same technology that powers facial recognition and self-driving cars may soon help Maine's shellfish industry protect people from the dangerous effects of harmful algal blooms, according to researchers at Maine’s Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences.

"Deep learning approaches have become incredibly sophisticated, and using them creatively can allow us to address all sorts of challenges," senior research scientist Nick Record, a modeller and the senior author of the paper, stated in a press release issued by the laboratory.
